The Gift That Keeps On Giving

Hey folks!  Murphy Winston here to tell you how you can make a difference in people's lives and all you have to do is swing by the shop, pick up a ceiling tile, and cover it with your art.  Let me give you all a little back story.

Back in August of 2010, our fearless leader Dan Shorr decided he wanted to do lend a helping hand to those that may not have the resources to help themselves...   Ceiling Tiles For Charity was born.  This is the idea people, POPS provides the ceiling tiles, the type that obviously fit in the ceiling of the shop, customers or anyone for that matter can come in and grab a tile.  All that is asked is a donation that goes to two charities of the shop's choice before the due date.  The donation can be anywhere for a penny to a billion dollars, whatever the customer wants to donate is fine.  The ceiling tile can be turned in whenever the person is finished with the product.

For the first round POP chose the Williams Syndrome Association & the Autism Society.
The Williams Association's National WSA office is located in Troy, Michigan.  This makes sense because POP was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan.  For those, like myself included, that are not familiar with Williams Syndrome this is what it is according to their website; " Williams syndrome is a genetic condition that is present at birth and can affect anyone.  It is characterized by medical problems, including cardiovascular disease, developmental delays, and learning disabilities.  These occur side by side with striking verbal abilities, highly social personalities and an affinity for music".  For more information on Williams Syndrome, and how to get involved, check out their website at http://www.williams-syndrome.org/

The Autism Society based out of Bethesda Maryland.  Autism affects millions of family's everyday and I'm sure you know a family that has been affected by autism.  For those of you that are not familiar with autism this is what it is according to the Autism Society's website: "Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a "spectrum disorder" that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees".  For more information on Autism and how to get involved check out the website at http://www.autism-society.org/about-autism/

The shop raised a generous amount in donation money to send to both organizations.

In January of last year POPS chose the Lexington Humane Society & National Cancer Society.  These are two more causes that also affect almost everyone.

The Lexington Humane Society has been helping animals in need, right here in our home town since 1889.  You have to be one sick individual to not love animals, unfortunately there are tons of people out there that don't, and the Lexington Humane Society has been their to rescue animals for some time and hopefully will still be here for many years to come.  To find out more about the Lexington Humane Society and how to get involved with this organization go to  http://lexingtonhumanesociety.org/about-us/

The National Cancer Coalition. I'm not saying anything new by stating that cancer has affected probably everyone's family and friends.  I don't know a single person that hasn't been touched by this horrible disease.  If you would like to know more about this organization and how to get involved go to their website and give it a tour at http://www.nationalcancercoalition.org/

Again POPS Resale collected a generous amount of money in donations to divide between the two organizations.

May of this year began the third round of Ceiling Tiles For Charity.  POPS has chosen Hospice of the Bluegrass & The Center For Women And Families.  Donations are due by September 29th of this year.

Hospice of the Bluegrass has been providing end of life treatment to terminally ill patients and their families since 1978.  My family unfortunately had to seek their services a few years ago.  Even though it was painful  for my family to go through Hospice was there to make the experience a little less stressful.  For more information concerning Hospice of the Bluegrass and how to get involved go to http://www.hospicebg.org/

The Center For Women And Families located in Louisville, Kentucky with offices in Shelbyville and Bullitt counties.  They are also located in Sellersburg, Indiana.  Domestic violence has destroyed thousand of families usually leaving women and children broken for most if not the rest of their lives.  Thankfully there is a place that cares like the Center For Women And Families.  For more information about this organization and how to get involved go to http://www.thecenteronline.org/

What's not to like about what has become an ongoing tradition here at POPS Resale?  Give a little bit of your time, & art to become a part of POPS history forever, and money to organizations that are making a difference in people's lives everyday.

Here are some of the tiles that are part of the shop since the first run of ceiling tiles for charity!
These are some of my favorite tiles, don't let the fact that they are all pretty awesome stop you from doing a tile.  I have the same problem of embarrassment folks. But you know what?  I have decided that this time I don't care that I'm not a great artist and it's about time I do some good in my life!

You don't have to live in Kentucky to put a ceiling tile up!  This is an amazing one from our pals the Dirty Socialites, from Dayton, Ohio!

Thanks again for taking time out of your day to check out the post.   This time I believe it was not a waste of time and I hope to see those tiles moving soon folks!

Sincerely,

Murphy Winston
